The other night, I had a dream that I’d submitted a book for publication, but it had to go through a panel of reviewers before they’d consider accepting it. I did get to read what the panel said–some liked it, some said it was a blatant Star Wars ripoff. One reviewer even said she just plain didn’t like me.
The press got back to me and said that they would accept the book, if I took the “Star Wars” parts out of it. I agreed, but commented that I was surprised that anyone noticed the references (the story was apparently a male/male space opera).
And then it showed the cover of the book: Two men fighting with light sabers in front of lava. Gee, I wonder how anyone noticed those “Star Wars” references!
I woke up instantly knowing why I had the dream. I submitted a story for an open call a few months back, and if it gets accepted, it will be my first published story. I’ve been biting my nails, waiting to hear a “yea” or “nay”.
I’ve been working on finishing other short stories in the meantime. I can’t just sit idle and wait for that email, after all. But that doesn’t mean I’m not checking my email way too often (so often, in fact, that one of my friends nearly slapped my phone out of my hands).
I’m hoping that the dream is a good sign, but I won’t know for sure until I get that email. I can promise you, however, that the story I submitted doesn’t contain any “Star Wars” ripoffs.
